Filial 'Beggar Boy' , Singapore Ah Q
"The State Coroner Earnest Lau said in his findings that Ah Boy had panicked and somehow fallen to his death. On 18 Dec, he recorded a verdict of misadventure."
Thus ended the real story of a young teen, in a dysfunctionalfamily compounded by autism in his short and sad live.As a footnote I try to piece his tragic events because his life need not be forgotten. In this time and age, every life tell a story,no matter how insignificant, especially Sebestian, as he also falls through the social safety net, in fast paced Singapore. Click here for who is Ah Q .
Fell to his death
Sebestian Yeo Wei Xiong was only a bit on 14 when he felled from the 12th floor of a Block 646 on Ang Mo Kio Street 61.(tomato town).See Map.He must have thought the police was pursuing him.Being autistic affected his communication and social skill. He must have thought the men in blue were pursuing him. In actual facts, they were there for his safety at when at 1 am past midnight, all were supposed to be asleep in their warm bed and pillow. Here he was, dirty and mop haired and tired.
Sebastian Home.
However, for Sebastian, home is the stairways ,chairs and bustop, out in the open, chased out of a loving home and love by his own mom, 30, petite ,jobless and divorced. He did not fight it. He just took it as a matter of facts, when they moved into the rented two rooms 2 years back. Mum started staying away from the job when finally, she could not find any. Then the whole world dropped. The food on the table became smaller and tinnier. Between the two of them, Sebastian knew then that he had to go hungry and get the food for himself. Out in the streets below.
Cycle of errors
The cycle of errors started when the men in blue responded to a call by a man ,about a skinny long hair girl ,hanging around coffeeshop neighbouring Block 632 past midnight. He is a religious man and a good family, and so his natuaral instinct kicked in. It is no place for the young girl, to be out past midnight. There were reports and many cases of crime around Singapore and so ,he dialed 999.
Skinny Girl
It is actually Sebestian ,malnourished due to lack of food, small and long hair, because haircut is not a priority when money is not around. And because his Mum did not care or said to cut his hair. He was as usual sleeping rough and out. In the same worn out shirt, short and dirt on his body. He had done it many times already, until he became a fixtures by the stallholders.Undersized boy , wearing the same set of clothing , day after day, never growing taller and never schooling. They noted the slender boy, asking the diners and customers for small change. "Uncle", he would say," can you give me money for food". Momentarily stunned, they usually obliged, by giving some small change. For what kind of heart would refuse to give a little change to a skinny boy ? He was always polite and most aunties and uncle and gave, stuck by pity and plenty. But Sebestian did not ask the stallholders directly for for food, instead he went to the commerce cycle of money in exchange for food as the stallholders would give food if Sebastian asked. They never fail to observe his dealings and most gave a bit more on the takeaway. He then head to an empty table, and ate heartily, and making sure that a portion is left behind . He then repacked it again with the rubber band and headed for home. Then he went back , up the lift to his home ,to his mom taking the lift.
Moved in 2 years ago
They were seen moving in 2 years ago. Mother and son. Neighbours a few doors away always noted that Sebestian seem to be the sole food bringer, of food, toilet papers and other essential items for his mum, when your child would be playing xboxs and playstations. She was seldom seen out, once only to borrow the phone from next door. Sebestian was enrolled in special school before, said his mom. However, due to financial issues , the mother was heard by neigbours to stop his schooling ,especially when she had two other children besides Sebestian. The two much younger siblings were not staying with them here.
Food on the door handle
He was alway seen to place the packed food on the handle of door, and knock. The neighbours also noted that the door never open to him. Yet he knew that the food packet needs to be deliver, for his mom, for her tummy. He was thus forced out, of schooling and home by his dysfunctional mom and lack of help and society. They saw it all , the knock, the begging, the unopen door. One neighbour even offered him a place to sleep , went the doors was still not open late in the night, but Sebestian was alway politely did not take up the offer. When concerned neighbour asked where his mom was, he always replied, at home.
Stairways and Bustop
Thus the stairways and bus top, chairs and tables of the areas around became his home, playground, of a 14 years old boy. Should it happen in Singapore ? Or must it be hidden in the back of the mind and politely blanked out, this unkempt young beggar,in our midst of plenty. Now back to the midnight hour. The men in blue noted that he was a familiar figure around the areas. But when asked by Officer , Sebestian for some reasons gave the wrong address, not his real block. Now what goes on in the mind of Sebastian, the 14 years old at 1 past midnight ?
Mind of Sebastian at 1 am
The uniforms must have frightened him, these mind in blue. Being autistic and lack of schooling and adult supervision , he must have communicated badly. He was quoted as saying he wanted to walk back by himself, pointing to a wrong address. He wanted to break free from the men in blue. Sebastian must have taken it badly the presence of the men. He was seen moving in the direction of the block 646. Concerns made the officer follows just for the record, but it only made Sebastian nervous. He was seen darting between pillars, to escape their sights.
Seen at Elevators Up
The last he was seen in the elevators going up. When the officer finally figure out ,a thud was heard. It was Sebastian, on the concrete ground. He had fallen from up above. There on the the 12 floors, they found a slipper wedged on the outer parapet, as if Sebastian was trying to hide by climbing out of the stairscase and onto the parapet.
Refuses to open door
Initially when the police went to inform his mother, she refuses to open the door and the body was left in the mortuary. Alone is life as in death. Only 3 days later when the mom wanted to borrow the neighbour`s phone, was the police able to inform her of her son`s death. The neighbours quickly inform the police that the mother was out of the house. At the Mortuary, two social workers were enlisted to accompany her . Just as expected, when she broke down on seeing his body, and she had to be put on a wheelchair.
Stallholder Remembers
Meanwhile, the stallholders who heard about the fall , remembers him nominally as Ah Boy, or Beggar Boy. Look into his background and he should be called Sebastian the disadvantaged Boy.
hair as of a sad state of affairs in fast spaced Singapore.
Moved to the quick and souls
Some stallholders were moved to the quick and the souls by raising a collection for his funeral.
A bit here and there and soon $3000 was collected . A local noodle sellers made the funeral arrangements. A monk was hired to conduct prayers for his young soul. And finally after the cremation his ashes placed in a nearby temple. Sebastian had gone to a better place, a place without pain, begging and eternity, a playground in the sky. The even sadder ending is that the mother was unable to go to the niche as she does not know how to find the way there from her home.
Episodes
Thus Sebastian rest in peace, more a victim of the failures,he had fallen through the crack of the social safety net. Perhaps ,in hindsight , non uniformed officers be deployed to handle children case's . It does not helps the men in blue images, when in tv shows , it depicts arresting episodes by the men in blue.Such stereotype create fears in children. Sebastian must have seen the episodes on the community centre or coffeeshops .
Previous Case
Interestingly,a similar case was noted when a minor, was noted for glue sniffing, and jumped down from a height when the day for reporting to the police station arrived. The officer in the case regretted for having written the report that led the minor to jump down. Thus ended the life of Sebastian . Internet logged and not forgotten !

Railway KTMB saga ends at Woodland after 20 years at Tanjong Pagar
It went through 3 Ex Premiers on Malaysia side, and two from Singapore side when the baggage have finally been opened. It involves in the end trading the lands that straddle Singapore a swarth of prime real estate, snaking and chugging thru residential estates and many commercial buildings with a startling change. The dinosaur aged old railway train which belong to Malaysia have not changed much since the 50s.Its operating system have baffled and mystified many who could not see the conundrum, of jet age living with the slow age. Political wills have prevailed over past differences, with water, land ,airspace thrown into the works. And all have failed before. The bridge was too far, even building the 2nd link bridge, there was still the gulf that separated Singapore and Malaysia. It might have continued into the future have it not been solve today. The founding farther, Dr Goh also passed away last week, he was the GA in Singohpore. Probably his modesty and humanity stopped him from having the credits of having made Singapore into what it is today. And back to the KTM land deal, Singapore was once part of Malaysia in the 50s. The KTM was then chugging away, many a tourists and people alike to northen park of Malaya, through Johore, the frontier town. I remembered , on my NS leave, I took a $50 into my backpack and hitch a ride, bus or train to Penang and back again in two weeks or bust.It opened my eyes and change my characters on how Society works. I have met crooks , drug seller and kind driver who allow me to jump into their vehicle on my way to Penang.
Meanwhile the impasse on the status of KTM Berhad (KTMB) land , that presently cut across half of Singapore was never settled . With ex Premier, who was insulted when he studied as an intern in the past in Singapore, to the Minister whose father was banned from Singapore for instigating the riots in Singapore, all the angst will float to the surface. However Datuk Seri Najib, the son of the founding of Malaysia and the son of the Present PM of Singapore both were tiny tots when the turbulence of the birth of Singapore and Malaysia were emerging in the 50s. Datuk Seri Najib must have spent happy time in Singapore, or sat through the KTMB that was the mode of transport in the 50s. In the cattle class, it was noise ear shattering noise of the 1000 horses locomotive engines. Presumably, he was in the end of the train which should be a comfortable decibels and poshed. Anyway time have moved and the water under the bridge have moved and meanders forward and KTMB was left in a stark time warp, not there , but here, and ever heard of having your passport stamped or not stamped with Malaysian chop in Singapore ?Two countries one system ? One could almost commit a crime in Silly Singapore and seek asylum in KTMB station, much like the porous borders of Canada, when the stateline could be drawn in the grass. So many have flees US by being arrested on Canadian borders which voids the arrest.
Now back to the KTMB. Malaysia will move its railway station at Tanjung Pagar to Woodlands, the norhtern most part of Singapore. The clincher would be the three parcels of KTMB land - at Tanjung Pagar, Kranji and Woodlands here - would be jointly owned, developed or traded by an M-S company owned 40 by Singapore and the rest by the other party . Most expect the land to be in the Marina Bay , where the reclaimed land will starts in the Billions. For curiosity sake, the sand that is the building or parcels of land that stood was source from other than Malaysia. It might be helpfull if the flowers that grace the building be be soiled with sands from Malaysia , to show the ironies of it all. It was banned from importing the sand from Malaysia for the construction industry especially building the shoreline or enlarging the shoreline of Singapore. Most like Singapore to be cute, and small, not bigger, so the easier to handle with. That is the reasons the land cost in the billions.Importing sand from faraway land is an expensive affairs, grain by grains.
Now on the nitty gritty, both PM agreed on the enhanced features, much like the buttons on the internets,on the agreement POA signed in 1990. At that time, the enhanced features was nowhere to be seen, especially with the feisty Ex Premier.
Elaborating on the deal, both side would meet again in one month,s time in Malaysia,
which is the hot month of June. Many hailed the agreements as win-win. The baggage was left two long in the storeroom, and on opening would be a treasure trove of historical wonders. On the other hand it would enhance the travel of both countries with the establishment of rail and subway link in Johore and Singapore, bypassing the current causeway which is a cause for concerns and more. The back in time immigration facilities smacks of time warp, the new alongside the old, the piles still in the water of the infrastructure of the crooked causeway. The breaking of the water pipeline would also make most Singapore thirty, but they might as well sipped Champagne in the absence of water. The statement said by Najib, was worthy to quote "we see light at the end of the tunnel.".and "We are both smiling," .Further PM Najib standing beside Lee said it was an occasion to rejoice. It is about time, the glass was gathering cobwebs after 20 years in the same post. The ice buckets need to be refilled though, the holder needs to be polish to show the shine. Finally the people of Singapore and Malaysia will get to rejoice and join in the destruction of the current CIQ centre in which people of both side had to face in the daily grind transmuting .
The statement said KTMB will shift to Woodlands by July 1 2011. In a concession
Malaysia's customs, immigration and quarantine facilities will also be located there, a strange but mixed sovereign agreement to facilitate the users. Presumably, lawbreakers will be under Malaysian and Singapore system of law.
The joint company known as M-S Pte Ltd set up by Dec 31,with the smallest in in the history of the Company Registrar with Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Singapore's Temasek Holdings. It will hold six parcels of land totalling 271ha one of the biggest landlord next to the listed company in Singapore. The historic land parcels are in Tanjung Pagar, Kranji and Woodlands, currently a bunch of old buildings, illegally storage space and leanto, untouched by Singapore,s law. It is expected all activities will be legalised and much converted by land developers here in Singapore.
The PMS also envisage the rapid transit system (RTS) between Tanjung Puteri in Johor Baru and Singapore to take over the current descript and non fucntioning CIG. The RTS would be fully developed and integrated with public transport services by 2018,where the like of MagnetLev would be widely available.

New Yorker meet Mother after 30 years
Jerry says of his life story:
"In 1972, my parents, the Mullins, moved to Singapore and rented a house on Jalan Limau Manis. Within a year’s time, my mother met a lady named Mrs Silva who lived down the road and taught at an all-girls’ school.
"One day, Mrs Silva met a woman at the butcher shop who knew of a pregnant Hokkien-Chinese woman in her fifth month, my birth mother. She worked as a wash amah and her husband, my birth father, was a taxi driver. They lived by Changi Beach. Unfortunately, the family was too poor to afford another baby.
"While my birth mother wanted to keep me, my birth father was insistent that I’d be given up for adoption because of the additional financial burden. They could not afford an eighth child.
"The only condition my birth parents required of the prospective adopting parents was that they paid for the tubal ligation of my birth mother. This way they would not have to endure the dilemma of having yet another child.
"After hearing the story, Mrs Silva asked if my parents minded adopting a Chinese baby. They said no. So Mrs Silva told them about the Tan’s situation. The Mullins expressed interest in adopting the Chinese baby and agreed to the terms of the adoption.
"Four months later I was born on August 04, 1973 at 2:13am. Four or five days after I was born, Mrs Silva accompanied my mother to Kandang Kerbau Hospital to pick me up and take me home.
"The final legal adoption took a year to be approved while the Department of Social Welfare reviewed the parental skills of my adopting parents. The petition was approved on August 5, 1974, and was finally filed on August 15, 1974". Some shots of the happy moments.

To live and die in Singapore, how many ways to go ?
Lets talk about smoking. It has been estimated that half the world population is dangerously expose to 2nd hand smoke. Smoking has been proven to be the cause of cancer of the lung in the long term. From 1st smoking to dying from the effects is a long way off, say about 20 or more years. So it is a slow and steady way to go .. The profilations of smoking and smokers should be seen as an astounding success of markerting and taxations. Where is the linkage ? To market a product that poisons the lung , slowly and acceptably, killing the buyers who pays for the benefits of the murder by death, with consent by the buyer and encouraged by society is a contradiction in itself. Yet murder by knife and other objects wielded by another party to the object party is punishable by law ! Cigarettes and nicotine, knife and other murderouse implements, that causes and accelerate the death of the body itself , all are implements and by itself causes death. Yet one is legal and encouraged. Smoking that is. Still cant see the difference. Tell this to the diehard smokers, and the smoke is too thick, the addiction to nicotine so strong ,that they cannot see through the arguments. I have stopped arguing with a smoker. Only to wish them luck in their endeavors and walked away, because but for the grace of God, there stood I.An addict to nicotine and smoking , controlled by an object the size of a little finger.
The other case in point is food. Food for the body that is. Too much fats, salt and other undesirable ingredients. Results.?Strokes, the body that is half paralysed , the result of unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Not the young body, but later in midlife. The accumalations of bad food. Killing Singaporeans ,slowly and surely.

Fifty ways to end, multitasking in the loo being the first for smokers.
The tough antismoking laws to save themselves from themselves by the Authorities were the most common reasons by loover, since they were in the loo. The big loo is normally seen as a big ashtrays. These were the most common reasons given in a recent street poll. Which makes it run into conflict with the no smoking law enacted by the Board. Tell it to the guardpost, and the security personnel will half hearted go into the toilet to stop the loover to cease, and then promptly go to another corners and pull out a cigarettes. You can smell a smoker by their breath,it seems that as a baby, their lungs were full of nicotine when born ?Possible.? Try telling that to a smokers and they will tell you a longer stories of why it is good and safe to smoke. Save yourself first, for second hand smokes can kill too. An addicts will never know what hits them. So it comes to the questions, what one is to do when there is smoking in the loo ? The law on smoking is an ass when this situation arises. I normally advice a water bath, flung over the loo to wash the air over the area. Next could be coloured water.
Anyway the poll, commissioned by Pfizer (Singapore) and the Restroom Association (Singapore) on 288 smokers, revealed that one in five smokers here had smoked or would do so in a public toilet. Presumeably a bill would be passed in Parliament to banned smoking in the toilet. All Malaysian toilets are smoking areas if one have visited the trouble spot up north. Tell it to the guards, and they would be none the wiser on what to do, will the camels stickng out of their pockets.
The polls also reveals that the majority of such smokers also said that they would dispose of their cigarette butts in the toilet bowl. Either the Bills be passed to declare that henceforth that all pubic toilets be deem a smoking place or is the authorities need a poll to to do that. Then the Board need to go for dental fixture for better teeths and effective, for the tongues is weak. Otherwise, dont bother to pass such laws. Its ineffectiveness is irritating and sucks. God bless the smokers more than those who dont.
However, those who had smoked in public toilets also said that there are deterrents to discourage them from smoking. More than one-third of such smokers said that while a heavy fine would be the most effective deterrent, at least a third felt that they would not smoke in the public toilet if it was very clean and nice-smelling.
In light of the findings, the pharmaceutical firm and the association have joined hands to implement a public awareness drive to discourage smokers from lighting up in public toilets. They should then visit the dental association for iron teeth to bite better. By flashing their powered dentures, it would saves smokers from themselves and saves a lives, a worthy act in view that second hand smokes kills second person nearby.Smoking is like a state of slow murdering, bits by bits, and allowed by law.
Now the authorities will from next month,at all 24,500 public toilets across Singapore will display posters underlining the harm of nicotine addiction, encouraging smokers to overcome their cravings and quit the habit by calling the Health Promotion Board Quitline or seek help from a doctor or healthcare professional. Killing of a second by second hand smoke is murder.
Would you buy at the upcoming Woodbury Common in Kulai,Johor.?
Now back to the future. Now, the PM met representatives from the Chelsea Property Group in New York on Monday to parley. The joint venture between Chelsea Premium Outlets and Genting Group, it is part of the Iskandar Malaysia project. It must control the TP mafia. Otherwise , it will leave a bad taste, after the shopping and browing . The added cost would deters all from shopping there.
Chelsea Premium Outlets is owned by Chelsea Property Group, which is the world's largest owner, developer and operator of upscale outlet centres in the United States, Japan and South Korea.
"It is the first (Chelsea) centre in the (Asean) region and I'm very happy that they have chosen Malaysia," said Mr Najib. Next stop for him would be to stop at the TP HQ in Kulai, and lay down the rules. Stop laughing you punk.
He said he understood other countries in the region had been trying to woo the Chelsea Group to set up the centre.
Its centre in New York - Woodbury Common - lures millions of shoppers to its discounted items of designer brands like Coach, Gucci, Zegna, and Burberry. Items are a season old and are between 25 and 60 per cent cheaper.
Mr Najib, however, said there was a slight delay in the Malaysian project earlier as the Chelsea Group had wanted to regroup its finances during the economic crisis. He said: "Now that they have done so, they've got additional reserves for the project."
He was confident the centre would also spin off secondary business and economic activities for supporting industries. Also the spin off would be great for the TP HQ in Johore. The saliva will be free flowing in 2010, when the whole setup will be up and running. This is an OFf budget proposal running parallel the the PM. It is advisable to avoid going on the road, during the festivities period. It coincides stalking up the larders, new clothing and topping up the bank. The whole mechanism is geared and officially approved, it is a monster that feeds itself. No one can stop it PM or MP. Money is the root cause of evils when you are travelling the road up north. The TP will get it away from your wallets gleefully.
"Besides promoting tourism, Malaysian small-and-medium industries will have the opportunity to get involved," Mr Najiib said, adding that local products like batik would likely be featured alongside international brands. And the local corruptions for all tourist to see, and feel.
